I will start a new chapter in two weeks as I prepare to immigrate to the UK. This moment has been the culmination of years of hard work and anticipation. Over the past two weeks, I’ve been fully engaged in packing away 18 years of memories into boxes and suitcases. Leaving behind the place I’ve called home is a bittersweet feeling, but I’m excited about the new experiences.
As I sort through my belongings, I realise how much I’ve grown and changed. Things that once held sentimental value now seem less important than the adventures awaiting me in a new country. While it’s difficult to say goodbye to friends and family, I know that this is a necessary step.
Packing up is a good mental exercise as it requires me to decide what I can bring, what I have to leave behind, and what I can live with and without.
Here are some examples of what I need and want: Gadgets and digital devices for work. Shoes that I want to take with me. Only enough warm clothes to stay comfortable. I am leaving all my open-back maxi dresses as I am well aware that the place I am going is not tropical weather like in Saigon.
In addition, packing is also like a workout practice because I have to weigh every box and suitcase to ensure they meet the weight limit.
Other tasks I must do while packing
- Organise essential documents and make copies.
- Cancel subscriptions and services.
- Notify banks and credit card companies about my change of address.
- Arrange for shipping of more oversized items. (though in the end, I decided not to ship anything to save up. I packed what I could fit into three suitcases 23kg each for check-in and a 5kg backpack for hand carry)
- Donate some and sell items that I don’t need anymore.
- Clean and declutter my current living space. Take inventory of everything I pack.
What’s Next Once I Immigrate?
Once I arrive in the UK, I must pick up my BRP (Biometric Residence Permit) at the University, get a new sim card, open a new bank account, get familiar with the local area, and set up essential services like utilities and internet. It’s a lot to think about, but I can handle it. I am lucky to have places to stay for three weeks before my course starts, thanks to my former boss’s help. Later on, I’ll be staying at Brunel University London accommodation. I also have old friends reaching out to offer support when they know I am going to the UK. How blessing!
During all the planning and preparations, I’m also reflecting on the journey that has led me to this point. The obstacles I’ve overcome, the lessons I’ve learned, and the personal growth I’ve experienced along the way. Immigrating to a new country is a significant step, but I believe it’s a step towards a brighter future.
As I continue packing, I find myself feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness. The unknown can be both thrilling and intimidating. However, stepping out of my comfort zone is necessary for personal growth. It’s an opportunity to broaden my horizons, meet new people, and open myself up to new possibilities.
Reflecting on life, it feels like an ever-evolving series, much like the seasons we watch on Netflix. And in this grand production, I am the protagonist of my movie. People come and go, some staying for entire seasons, while others play more minor roles and then move on to their own stories. Each of us carries the weight of being the main character in our own lives.
Life Is A Series Of Seasons
If I were to divide my life into seasons, the first would be my upbringing in Nha Trang, spanning 18 years. The second season encompasses my adult life in Saigon for another 18 years. And now, as I embark on my journey to the UK, I’m entering the third season, filled with new experiences and challenges. This transition from season 2 to season 3 will be particularly engaging as I navigate through the struggles of scams and a divorce, rebuilding my life and searching for a new direction to pursue a scholarship for a Master’s degree in England. It’s exciting to write the script for this new personal transformation season intentionally.
No matter where I find myself or what I do, I’m determined to make the most of every experience. The MBA course I’m about to undertake is a pivotal moment that will undoubtedly reshape my life for the better. Finally, I will be surrounded by an international academic environment I’ve always dreamed of. While I’m aware of the hardships and unforeseen challenges that await, I’m ready to face them head-on, knowing they are growth opportunities.
Get Ready
One of my favourite mottos I have always embraced is:
Hope for the best and prepare for the worst.
I am not going out to the unknown unprepared but instead trying to equip myself as much as possible with available information and the best preparation possible. Another tenet I go with is “planning on my plan not going according to plan”, meaning that I will have a backup for a backup plan. It might sound pessimistic to some, but it’s a backup for what I must do when the worst outcome occurs; I’ll still survive. That’s just how I roll.
I understand that there might be long working hours and busy schedules, so I intend to become a master of time management to maintain a healthy work-life balance and take care of my well-being. My health will always remain a top priority, as I can’t achieve anything without it. Additionally, I’m committed to continue developing discipline and financial skills, being open to new opportunities for growth and making a positive impact in the world.
My ultimate goal is to evolve from a local to a global perspective. By nurturing my personal development, I’ll be better equipped to elevate my business brands. In other words, I’ll be able to add more value to others by becoming a better version of myself. Success will result from taking one step at a time, and I am determined to succeed.
I want the best on my upcoming journey to the UK and my MBA course. May this new season of my life be filled with exciting opportunities and transformative experiences. I promise to give back and contribute good values to the world. I make my life’s mission to help others to better their lives. Whoever has the privilege to learn also must teach to share the experience and help others reach their potential. I am grateful for all the support I receive from family, friends and even friends of friends.
I am blessed to have so much help from others to be more confident walking my path. Thank you!
