Part 1. The Benefits of Study Abroad – First Impressions

Studying abroad is an opportunity that offers countless benefits, even for individuals who already reside in developed countries with solid educational systems. Everyone has different experiences of studying abroad, depending on where you are coming from. 

My goal is to offer an insightful perspective by sharing the pros and cons of studying abroad, along with personal tips that have helped me overcome the challenges. Please keep in mind what I am sharing are first impressions. I have started this study abroad journey for only six weeks; hence, my experience will develop throughout the academic year. Without further ado, I’ll divide this experience into three blog series. In Part 1, we’ll explore the numerous benefits of studying abroad. Part 2 will address the downsides and provide practical tips to overcome these challenges. Finally, in Part 3, I’ll share additional tips for a successful academic year. Additionally, I’ll delve into my newfound passion sparked by the MBA course, highlighting the personal growth and invaluable experiences it has brought me.

1. Breaking Out of Comfort Zones

Studying abroad is a transformative experience that pushes individuals out of their comfort zones. It encourages us to challenge ourselves, adapt to new environments, and embrace unfamiliar circumstances, ultimately fostering personal growth and self-discovery. 

Every day presents an opportunity for us to grow by observing the world around us, observing people’s behaviours, and understanding how things operate. When we venture outside the familiar borders of our home country, we embark on a journey that uncovers hidden talents, boosts our confidence, and shapes our problem-solving abilities.

2. Expanding Perspectives

The second advantage of studying abroad is the opportunity to broaden individual’s perspectives. By immersing ourselves in a new culture, we gain a deeper understanding of different global realities and diversity. Interacting not only with local students but also with international students from various backgrounds and countries provides a unique chance to learn from each other, exchange ideas, and comprehend different cultural nuances. This exposure to diverse perspectives nurtures a global mindset, enhancing adaptability and communication skills, which are crucial in today’s interconnected world.

3. International Experience and Employability

Employers highly regard international experience in today’s competitive job market. Studying abroad showcases an individual’s willingness to take on new challenges and demonstrates their ability to adapt to unfamiliar environments. Furthermore, employers often seek candidates who bring fresh perspectives, cultural awareness, and an understanding of global dynamics to their organisations. As a result, gaining international education through studying abroad significantly enhances your resume, providing a distinct advantage that sets you apart from others.

4. Personal Independence and Responsibility

Studying abroad encourages personal independence and self-reliance. It offers a chance to navigate daily life in a new setting. From independently managing tasks and life administration to budgeting finances and handling personal responsibilities. This independent lifestyle not only instils a sense of accountability but also strengthens essential life skills such as time management, problem-solving, and adaptability.

As MBA students, we typically have an average of 25 – 27 hours of weekly lectures. In addition to the time we spend on self-study, there are also group work requirements. Some of us even have to juggle work responsibilities across different time zones. Therefore, developing practical time management skills becomes crucial in our academic journey.

5. Cultural Immersion

Experiencing a new culture firsthand is an enriching aspect of studying abroad. Whether embracing traditional customs, exploring historical landmarks, or indulging in local cuisine, studying abroad offers a unique opportunity for cultural immersion. These experiences foster a deeper understanding and appreciation for global diversity, enabling individuals to become more culturally competent and open-minded. 

One of the activities I thoroughly enjoy during the weekends, typically on Sundays, is visiting the National Art Galleries in the heart of London. The best part is that these galleries offer free admission. Hence, you might use this to delve into history and diverse cultures. Exploring something different on weekends is one of my methods for improving my mental well-being.

6. Exposure to Different Structures

Studying abroad provides exposure to different infrastructural systems, which can significantly enrich the understanding of how other societies function. Whether experiencing the efficient public transportation systems of countries like the UK or adjusting to alternative modes of commute, individuals gain invaluable insight into various infrastructural norms. This exposure allows students to compare and contrast different systems and bring home fresh perspectives to improve their communities.

It’s truly fascinating to observe and analyse the contrasting infrastructures of Vietnam and the UK. In Vietnam, motorbikes serve as the primary means of transportation for locals, especially for short-distance travel. However, the popularity of cars has been steadily growing in Vietnam. Additionally, the emergence of digital transportation services, such as Grab, has contributed to the changing landscape. Notably, Vietnam is home to approximately 200,000 app-based drivers, predominantly male, with the majority concentrated in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Within this group, Grab claims a significant market share, emerging as the leading player in the industry by a considerable margin.

In central London, approximately 80% of the 1.1 million commuters rely on the Underground (with a daily ridership of 400,000) or the surface railway termini (with a daily ridership of 860,000) for everyday journeys. Surface railways are the primary means of transportation in South London, as a significant portion of the London Underground’s routes are on the surface rather than underground. The Tube, carrying almost half of London’s commuters, remains the most widely used mode of public transport in the area.

7. Language Development

For non-native English speakers (like myself), studying abroad offers an excellent opportunity to improve their English language skills. Engaging with locals, interacting with native speakers daily, and attending lectures conducted in English provide an environment for language development. Enhancing English vocabulary and proficiency opens doors to better professional opportunities on whether you wish to return to their home countries or to enter the international business markets. 

Despite living in a developed country with a reputed educational system, studying abroad offers a range of benefits that extend beyond what is available within one’s home country. The personal growth, international exposure, and cultural immersion obtained through studying abroad create lifelong memories and lay the foundation for success in an increasingly globalised world. Moreover, it provides an opportunity to connect with individuals from diverse backgrounds, fostering a global network that can prove invaluable in professional endeavours. So, don’t miss out on the life-changing experience of studying abroad, regardless of your financial background or the efficiency of your home country’s educational system.
