Embarking on an MBA is a significant commitment that offers both challenges and triumphs. In this article, I share my personal journey through the MBA program at Brunel University London, the fundamental differences between an MBA and other Master’s degrees, and how this path can lead to profound personal and professional growth.

My MBA Experience at Brunel University

My MBA journey at Brunel University has been transformative. The course structure consists of core modules in the first term, including Marketing, International Business, Leading People and Managing Organisations, and Corporate and Business Strategy. In the second term, the modules differ based on the chosen pathway. I chose the General pathway, while others selected Healthcare or Digital Innovation. Regardless of the pathway, we all shared Business Economics and Corporate & Business Finance modules. Additionally, I chose Operations Management and Managing for the Future, which has been my favourite class so far. Throughout the course, we work on a Business Project Dissertation, starting from the first term, to thoroughly develop ideas and topics of interest.

A key component of our Business Project Dissertation was the Leadership Management Skills (LMS) workshops. We were required to choose 10 out of 12 workshops that covered a range of crucial skills. These workshops taught us everything from Time Management and Communication Skills to Consulting Skills. The highlight was the Consulting Skills workshop, taught by our Dean, which ended on a high note. It was the best workshop ever, offering a whole different level of insight and expertise.

Highlights and Challenges of the MBA Program

One of the highlights of the MBA program at Brunel was the opportunity to go on a study tour to Belgium, where we visited industry leaders, inspiring companies, and entrepreneurs. This tour is a valuable part of the program, providing real-world insights and networking opportunities. Although obtaining a visa for the trip was straightforward for me, some classmates faced challenges despite having all the necessary documents. Ultimately, everyone got their visas approved.

Embarking on an MBA is like taking on a full-time job, with 25-27 hours of lectures per week, including Saturdays. We had guest speakers from various industries sharing their experiences, and group work that helped develop time management and leadership skills. Individual assessments included coursework essays or written exams, and self-study time was crucial. Personally, I preferred starting assignments early to ensure thorough research and analysis, writing and editing iteratively, and adhering to academic standards, including plagiarism checks. For me, the journey and the lessons learned were more important than grades.

Differences Between a Master’s Degree and an MBA

When deciding between a Master’s degree and an MBA, understanding the key differences is crucial. While I provide a basic comparison here, I encourage you to do further research on a specific Master’s degree if you opt for that path.

Focus and Curriculum

• Master’s Degree: Provides specialised knowledge in a specific field, such as an MSc in Computer Science or an MA in Education. It involves theoretical and practical coursework, research, and sometimes a thesis.
• MBA: This program offers a broad overview of business management, covering finance, marketing, HR, operations, and strategy. It is practice-oriented, focusing on leadership and managerial skills through case studies, group projects, and internships.

Target Audience and Career Outcomes

• Master’s Degree: This degree is ideal for those seeking to deepen expertise in a specific field or advance academically. It leads to specialised roles, such as data scientist or research scientist, and can be a stepping stone for doctoral studies.
• MBA: This program targets professionals with work experience who aim for leadership or management roles. It prepares graduates for positions like a management consultant, investment banker, or CEO, providing a significant career boost.

Duration, Flexibility, and Cost

• Master’s Degree: Typically 1-2 years full-time, with part-time or online options. Generally less expensive than an MBA.
• MBA: Usually 1-2 years full-time, with part-time, executive (EMBA), and online options. Typically more expensive due to the comprehensive curriculum and resources.

• MBA: Extensive networking opportunities through alumni, industry partnerships, and business events. Emphasises a global business perspective with international study trips and opportunities to study abroad.

My Personal Take on Pursuing an MBA

Doing an MBA is a serious commitment that may require prioritising it above everything else. The motivation behind studying for an MBA varies; for me, it was about broadening my horizons and levelling up my knowledge.

The one-year course was an investment in my future, trading time for potential earnings to gain valuable knowledge and experience. Studying abroad comes with challenges, including feeling lost, frustrated, and homesick. However, these challenges contribute to personal growth, resilience, and a deeper understanding of oneself.

The friendships and networks built during the MBA program are invaluable and extend beyond the classroom. These connections support your professional journey and contribute to personal development through interactions in a foreign country.

Pursuing an MBA is not just about academic achievement; it’s a journey of self-discovery and personal growth. It requires dedication, hard work, and a commitment to learning.
